Social Reaction & Influence Story

"I Didn't Tell Anyone… But People Started Noticing"

You can argue with almost anything.

You can argue with a brochure. You can argue with a spec sheet, a salesman, a stranger online with loud opinions and a weak source. You can even argue with a recommendation, because a recommendation is just someone else's certainty asking to become yours, and certainty is easy to resist when it's borrowed.

But you can't argue with a parking lot.

You can't argue with the same bike, in the same spot, every morning, ridden by someone who never once tried to convince you of anything. That's the part I didn't plan for. I didn't set out to become the person at the office that people came to with questions about electric bike India. I just started riding the Matter AERA to work and got on with it. I didn't bring it up. I didn't post about it. I didn't try to sell anyone anything.

And yet, within a couple of weeks, something shifted. People began watching. Then they began asking. A decision I'd made quietly, for my own reasons, became something other people were weighing seriously, for theirs. The attention arrived without any effort on my part, and that told me something true about how the electric bike user experience actually spreads in India. Not through argument. Through evidence.

Why People Noticed It Quickly

The first thing they noticed was the look.

The Matter AERA doesn't look like the thing people picture when they hear "EV." It's a streetfighter, sharp, muscular, low and deliberate, wearing all-LED lighting and an aggressive stance that reads as intent rather than decoration. It stood out in the parking area immediately, and not because it was loud. Because it was the opposite.

There was no engine sound. I'd pull in and park in near-silence, and people noticed that specifically, the way you notice a held breath in a noisy room. A couple of colleagues walked straight past it before realising it was mine. The design drew the eyes before anyone even knew it was electric; the silence kept them there.

It became a conversation starter without my saying a word. And that's worth sitting with, because the EV bike's real experience in India rarely begins with a pitch or an advertisement. It begins with someone watching a real person use one in a real setting, on an ordinary Tuesday, with nothing to prove.

What People Started Asking Me

Once the questions started, they came in a pattern I learned to expect. Almost everyone moved through the same concerns, in nearly the same order, like riders taking the same corner one after another.

Range came first. Everyone wanted to know how far it could go. The AERA carries a certified range of 172 km, with a real-world city range that settles consistently around 125 km. For my 40 km commute, a single charge covered two to three days without thought.

Running cost came second, and this was the one that genuinely surprised people. The AERA costs roughly ₹0.19 per kilometre on electricity, where a petrol bike in the same class costs upward of ₹2. For someone riding 1,000 km a month, that's a gap of ₹1,900 to ₹2,100, every month, quietly, in their favour.

Charging time came third. The standard 1 kW charger plugs into an ordinary 5-amp home socket and fills the battery in about six hours, plug in at night, wake to full. Fast charging brings that down to roughly two hours. Most people heard "six hours" and braced; then heard "while you sleep" and relaxed.

Performance doubts surfaced a few times, usually from those who assumed electric meant slow or dull. The AERA answers with a 4-speed HyperShift gearbox, the only one on any electric motorcycle in India, which means it shifts and rides like a real motorcycle. That single detail changed the conversation more than any number did.

Daily usability was the last question, and the most important. People wanted to know whether it actually worked for everyday life on Indian roads. After months of riding it daily, my answer was simple and unqualified: yes.

Why Most People Didn't Switch Immediately

Let me be honest. Most of the people who asked questions did not go out and buy one. And that's completely reasonable.

The biggest brake was inexperience. Nobody wants to spend ₹1.81 lakh on something they've never sat on, which is exactly why Matter runs experience hubs across Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru, Chennai, Jaipur and Ahmedabad, built specifically for test rides. Then there's the comfort of petrol: habits that have worked for years feel safe, and changing them feels like risk even when the logic points the other way. The internet doesn't help, there's a great deal of mixed, often outdated information about EVs out there, much of it about machines with nothing in common with the AERA, and people couldn't always tell what applied to which.

And underneath all of it, fear of change. Not irrational. Just human. The most common hesitation of all was the quietest one: people were waiting for proof from someone they trusted. They wanted to see an electric bike used, plainly and repeatedly, before committing, which is precisely why my dull, daily, visible usage started to matter more than anything I could have said.

How Their Interest Started Growing

The shift from curiosity to genuine consideration happened slowly, and it was driven by one thing above all: watching me use the bike, day after day, while none of the things they feared ever happened.

They saw the regular usage and noticed nothing dramatic going wrong. They saw the consistency of the commute, and that I never seemed anxious about range or charging. The questions sharpened, EMI options, service centres, app features, and casual interest hardened into something closer to real research. A few stopped treating it as an interesting idea and started treating it as an actual option.

Rajan ran the EMI calculations. Priya went to the Matter website. Vikram booked a test ride. None of it came from a recommendation by me. It happened because seeing real, reliable, daily electric bike performance in India up close did the one thing no brochure can: it took the abstract fear and replaced it with something concrete.

What I Realised From All This

People don't reject electric bikes. That's the thing I got wrong at the start. In my experience, most people are genuinely open to the idea. What they lack isn't conviction, it's a reference point. Someone they know, someone they trust, who made the switch and can speak to it plainly.

People aren't refusing EVs; they're being careful about something unfamiliar, which is a different thing entirely. They need real examples, not statistics floating free of any human being. Consistent daily use builds more trust than any advertisement, because it can't be edited. Experience outweighs opinion, mine and theirs both. And influence, it turns out, happens on its own when the product simply works.

The electric bike buying decision in India, for most people, isn't blocked by logic. It's blocked by uncertainty. And the fastest way to dissolve uncertainty is exactly what unfolded in our office parking lot: one person, one bike, one ordinary commute, repeated every day until it stops feeling extraordinary.

A pitch asks to be believed. A parking lot doesn't ask at all.

The Matter AERA is engineered for riders who understand that the most convincing argument a motorcycle can make is the one it never says out loud.
